Nate, Jess, and I were at Fuel and Fuddle Saturday night to test out some of the new menu options. Like I said in my last entry regarding this, there didn't seem to be a ton of new veggie-friendly options. They have what they always had and then a black bean burger (instead of a veggie burger) and Veg Head Pasta (instead of Left Coast Pasta), but I am almost positive that they used to have a pasta called Veg Head Pasta.
Before we could order though, all the power went out because there was a big storm outside, so that was exciting. I was getting irritated... I had been looking forward to this freaking black bean burger all week and I was going to be mad if they made everyone leave. While the power was out, we noticed how smoky the air was. I guess it's hard to see that when the lights are on. It's nice to know that everytime I step foot in the joint I am slowly putting one foot closer to the grave.
The power did come back on after a few minutes and we made our orders. Nate didn't get the Veg Head Pasta (traitor!) but got the Classic Veg Head sandwich instead. Boy, they really were lacking on the creativity when it came to naming the meatless entrees I guess.
When my black bean burger arrived, I was pleasantly surprised. I wasn't sure what to expect... I just kept imagining someone standing back there ladling a spoonful of black beans onto a bun and calling it a burger. But it ended up looking normal and tasted great too! It came with salsa on the side for a topping. Without even thinking about it, I dumped half the salsa on the section of sandwich I was eating. That was a mistake... it was way spicier than I thought it would be and didn't really go with my beer ("Hazed and Infused"... they didn't have the brewer name up on the board, but I'd like to find out what it is because this beer was good). I learned my lesson for the second half and ate it salsa-less. It tasted ok that way, but I think next time I will ask for barbecue sauce instead.

My wife and I (along with our friends Erin and Jay) go to Fuel and Fuddle every weekend pretty much. Jenni (my wife) and Erin almost always get their veggie burger, they LOVE it! So they were kinda upset to learn that they started a new menu and it didn't include their veggie burger. Jenni and I both tried their black bean burger a week or so ago and I was into it. It kinda reminded me of refried black beans formed into a patty, but I still enjoyed it. Jenni wasn't too into it though. So this past weekend we both ordered the Classic Veg Head. This is by far my favorite sandwich there! And when coupled with an order of Dip Sticks, you CANNOT go wrong!

On the subject of the amount of smoke in the room during the power outage, it is common for dining rooms to fill with smoke when power is lost, as the hood fans that pull the smoke out of the kitchen also shut down. Don't worry, it's not always that smokey.
