Mel's Pizza - Kittanning

Mel's Pizza used to be a typical pizzaria where you could sit at one of 2 or 3 tables to eat or just take your food home. They recently bought the old Bonellos restaurant (yes, the one with the buffalo statue). So now they are sort of a sports bar/lounge/restaurant. Jeff and I ate here over the weekend. We have eaten their pizza before and it is good. We heard from friends that the atmosphere of the place is fun (there are lots of small tvs throughout and one large screen at the front of the bar and there are mounted game systems at each table so you can lose quarters and amuse yourself while you wait). There are giant beer coolers at the entrance, so if you are a drinker you are set, but we hadn't heard anything about the food. Apparently for good reason. Jeff ordered a stromboli and I ordered a steak salad. Even though I don't eat meat, I usually order something like this because these salads come with more interesting things on them than a regular garden salad. I will usually order the steak on the side and let Jeff eat it. This time I forgot to order it special. So when our food arrived Jeff had a bare stromboli on a metal plate and I had a plate full of lettuce, 4 french fries, a ton of cheese, and steak-ums spread throughout my salad. Uh. In what way does steak-ums from a box constitute a steak salad? Anyway - no shrieking please - I was really hungry so I ate it anyway. (Animals all over are crying right now. Sorry guys.) It wasn't disgusting, as long as you like iceberg lettuce and steak-ums, but even for $5 it was overpriced and underwhelming. If we go here again we will stick with the pizza.

I've eaten at the "new" Mel's twice, and my experiences haven't been the greatest, either. Both times were during the lunch buffet hours. The first time, there were VERY few choices on the pizza counter, and not a great selection of salad items. The second time, there was a large group being served, therefore, there was NO pizza on the buffet, and salad items were scraping the bottom of the bowl. I understand, you can't know when you will get a large group, but still... And I didn't have a fork. I got my food, and couldn't eat it! I asked the waiter, who was very friendly, but he apparently forgot, so there I sat. I finally got up and went out front and asked, and someone fixed me up. The service was very friendly and the food was okay, but I doubt that I'll be returning any time soon.
