The Elbow Room - Shadyside

After discovering that Bites and Brews doesn't open until 4pm on Saturdays, Nate's parents and I decided to check out The Elbow Room instead since it is right next door (and coincidentally operated by the same people).

It has a neat decor - wooden and "funky"-ish. They have a brunch that goes from 11-2 on Saturdays, but the entire menu was eggs, eggs, and more eggs. So if you like eggs, that is apparently the place to be. They didn't even have pancakes on the menu, which I was pretty disappointed about. Who has a brunch with no pancakes?

I decided to order off the regular menu, which had a grand total of 3 vegetarian options, and 1 was only available at dinner time, so that was out. I believe one option was a big salad and another was a "Hot Veg" sandwich with alfalfa sprouts, hummus, and other veggies. I thought that sounded good, so I got it with a side of applesauce. The service wasn't terribly speedy... we all went through an entire drink (water - I wasn't out getting blitzed at 1pm) before our meals ever arrived.

My sandwich was good and the huge bowl of applesauce was a nice alternative to french fries (which you could also get, but I was going for a healthier approach that afternoon). However, I think the sandwich itself was around $8 for something about the size of a sandwich you make at home on regular sized pieces of bread. So, in my opinion it was overpriced.

I probably wouldn't go here again simply due to the lack of variety on the veggie friendly end, but it was a nice looking establishment. I definitely prefer Bites and Brews over this place, though.
