Recently I have been talking about tofu a lot. I remember back in my early days of being a vegetarian when I severely hated tofu. The problem is tofu isn’t easy to make. Good tofu is uncommon, great tofu is exceedingly rare. So the most common tofu is not very good. I decided I should compile a list of my favorite places to get tofu. But not just the place to get it, because I’ve found even though one tofu dish maybe great another can be mediocre. So I am compiling a list of dishes and locations. I will update it as I find more. Also these are listed in no particular order, I consider them all of equal greatness.
1) the Quiet Storm (Pittsburgh) – Graham Street Tofu
2) the Quiet Storm (Pittsburgh) – Tofu Tenders (appetizer)
3) China Palace (Pittsburgh) – Sizziling Tofu
4) Angkor (Pittsburgh) – Crispy Tofu Triangles (appetizer)
5) Angkor (Pittsburgh) – Fresh spring rolls (appetizer)
6) Thai Gourmet (Pittsburgh) – Tao Hu Todd (appetizer)
7) Veggie Planet (Boston) - Tofu Scramble (brunch)
8) Sweet Basil & La Filipiniana (Pittsburgh) – Thai Pumpkin Tofu Curry (Special)
9) Chaya (Pittsburgh) – Tofu Teriyaki
10) Chaya (Pittsburgh) – Inari (Nigiri Sushi)
Feel free to drop a comment listing your favorite tofu dish, or even a tofu related experience. This post will be on the Suggestions page. I will cross-reference it to the restaurants mentioned above also.

This is actually about a bad tofu experience. As much as I like the Square Cafe, they had some pretty mediocre tofu scramble. Now, I love tofu scramble. The best tofu scramble I've ever had was from Veggie Planet in Boston. But that is neither here nor there. The problem with the Square Cafe's tofu scramble is that they just kind of take some cubes, fry them up for a few seconds on a skillet, and then stick them on a plate with a few green peppers and onions and a pile of oil. There is no real flavor whatsoever. I would feel embarrassed to recommend this dish to a tofu lover.

It's so nice to read your thoughts about my place, the Quiet Storm. We take great pride in our tofu, and never tire of enthusiastic reviews. If you're ever in Morgantown, do try the tofu scramble at Mountain People's Kitchen. It is phenomenal. Keep up the good work!

Tasty Tofu? Do I have to do the George Carlin "Jumbo Shrimp" routine?
There is one restaurant that my dinner companion raved about the tofu appetizer. It was a Veitnamese black pepper and garlic stir fried tofu with onion, if memory serves. The tofu just went along for the ride.
I thought I toke a menu for reference, but no. Never saw it anyplace else. Could not find it in any of my Vietnamese cook books.
Pho Minh, 4917 Penn Ave, Pittsburgh
The CityPaper liked their Tofu with curry lemon grass. The rest of the menu is the fairly typical C+ fare that passes for vietnamese in PIT.
Of course, just lightly covering silken tofu in corn starch and deep frying it, is very Japanese, and simple. Not much in the way of taste. Kiku has it for top dollar.

Based on your suggestions, we tried the Tofu Tenders at The Quiet Storm and it was to die for! And so was their Tofu Peanut wrap. TQS has now made it to our Favorite-Restaurants-in-Pittsburgh list. Keep up the wonderful job you're doing.
Best wishes.

Have you gone there for breakfast? If not, I highly suggest that you do. Their soysauge is the best ever.

I am a big fan of Angkor. I have eaten here on many occasions. I usually don't get an appetizer, but based on the review here, I decided to try the Crispy Tofu Triangles. They were very tasty, but they were also very cold on the inside. I was wondering if this is normal or not? The outside batter was warm enough, but it seems like maybe the tofu on the inside was frozen, and when they fried these triangles, the heat didn't make it all the way through. Still, the rest of my meal was absolutely excellent, and I will always love this place!

I have had the tofu triangles only once or twice. I also list them as one of my favorite tofu dishes. I have never noticed that they were cold in the center.

Zaw's Asian Food in Squirrel Hill. It's takeout only, but the Genersl Tso's Tofu is the best in the city in my opinion. It's not on the menu, ask for it. Their number is 521-food and they're on Murray Avenue next door to Aiello's pizza.
