As part of the Eat It and Love It crew's ongoing quest to include more reviews of Indian restaurants, 4 of us chose to dine at People's Indian Restaurant in Garfield the other night.
I was happy with the interior of the restaurant. From the outside, it looks like another hole in the wall type of establishment, but it was actually very clean and decorated nicely. They kept the lighting very low, however. This was okay when we first arrived, but it got pretty dark outside over the course of our meal and I started feeling like I was eating in a poorly lit alley.
Despite the lighting, I was still pretty pleased with my food selection. I got the Chana Mushrooms, which is chickpeas and mushrooms in a spicy sauce (although mine was not very spicy since I choose a spiciness level of "2"). Nate and I also split an order of garlic nan and some vegetable samosas. All very good.
The only real downside to the evening (besides Nate thinking he saw a bug on one of his dishes - but I'll let him explain) was the long wait for the bill. In defense of the waitress, we did ask her to split the bill 3 different ways. I know this must be a never ending annoyance in the restaurant "biz," but likely happens often. It took her and 2 other restaurant employees upwards of 10 minutes to straighten everything out.
My overall impression of People's Indian was "ok." It was nice, the food was nice, but I wasn't particularly blown away by any aspect of it to put it into "heavy rotation" on my list of frequent dining spots. Still, I would at least recommend it to anyone looking for Indian food in that part of town.

I suggest that if you are in the area, you choose Taste of India instead. It is right up the street and everything is better there.

People's is my most favorite restaurant in Pittsburgh. I eat there at least once a month and I have ate Indian food in Austin, TX, NYC, and Philadelphia and I must say, nothing compares to People's.
In regards to your bill taking some time, there used to be a young guy who used to work there and had everything down to a science. He graduated from school I hear and got a job, so now I see new faces working. The service is a bit slower, but definately worth the wait!
I say People's is the best in the burgh.
