Beto's Pizza

This entry comes from a guest reviewer, Bryan! Thanks for the input - we always appreciate hearing from others.

Small and unimpressive from the outside, the building on 1473 Banksville Road veils one of the top pizza places in all of Pittsburgh. Getting to Beto's is the most challenging aspect of the place. Banksville Road - situated just outside of Greentree - is a several lane road split by a concrete barrier at several points. If coming from downtown, you cannot turn left into Beto's because of the barrier. You will have to drive past Beto's make a U-turn to get on Banksville coming in the opposite direction. The parking lot is small. There are two sections to Beto's. One door is for pick-up of call-in orders and another is for the dining area. The dining area is also small so don't expect to find a seat at prime times on Friday or Saturday night. It's best to go later.

The menu features the typical items you'd expect at a pizza shop. Pizza, sandwiches, and great appetizers. The pizza is the crown jewel on the menu. And it is not like any other pizza you've had. The pizza is served as square cuts, each costing 99 cents without toppings. It is cooked such that the cheese is partially melted and the crust cooked. When pulled from the oven, the generous staff sprinkles additional cold cheese on top followed by other toppings you may have ordered. Don't bother asking for extra cheese. Though it is excellent - and people ask for bags to purchase to take home - you won't need extra. Beto's is not skimpy with the toppings. The pizza is an excellent mix of hot bread and cold toppings. Throw in an order of their fried mozzarella sticks for the complete experience.
The food is cheap and you can expect to spend about $10 for two people.

You'll never go back to Pizza Hut again! Highly recommended!

Pros: Quality of Food, Generous Pizza Toppings, Inexpensive
Cons: Small Parking Lot, Small Dining Area, No Delivery

I recently tried Beto's and not only were the toppings cold, so was the rest of the pizza. I did like the crust, but could not get past the cold toppings. My wife ordered mushrooms on her slices and they were grey and looked like they came out of an old can.

I do like Beto's pizza (haven't had it in a while, but reading about it made me want some), and you are correct Kent, the shrooms do come from a can (I think the green peppers do also, so I don't reccomend them). I like the pizza's taste and it is unique in its own special way.
I gotta go get some!! Enjoy, Troy

After the recent talk about Beto's, I finally went down there and got some. Yes, the toppings were cold and so was all the uncooked cheese that they throw on the top, but the crust and sauce was super warm (I was burning my fingers on the first piece I ate). I got 4 slices and 3 toppings. Mushrooms were cold and canned, but they were your standard brown canned mushroom (not grey at all). I also ordered Peppers to see if they were as bad as I remembered, and they were better this time, a mix of green and red peppers that I think were still from a can or jar and yes, they were cold. My last topping was onions, and thses were fresh cut and cold, well, more like room temperature.

My conclusion is that my favorite piece was the plain one. When you add toppings, they sit on top of the cold cheese, and fall off anyway, so I was eating them off my plate with a fork. 4 pieces were too much for me, 3 would've been better, as I was getting too full to finish the 4th, and I wasn't enjoying the last piece as much as the first. Prices were still 99 cents a slice and 40 cents for toppings.
I used a lot of napkins because they are kind of messy.

I still think this is good pizza, and I will go back again, Enjoy, Mangia!!!

I haven't been back to Pittsburgh in years, but I've always told people that Beto's had the best pizza joint pizza I've ever tasted. I agree about the toppings, but I'll tell you I've never had better crust on a pizza, and the second day out of the fridge the pizza seems almost tastier! That's my recollection, anyway. I've had pizza from a lot of places, but if I ever get back to Pittsburgh I'm making a trip to Beto's to see if it's like it used to be. (Kind of hilarious that Banksville Road is still a mess. I do not miss the roads in Pittsburgh!)

Prices are going up all around . . . I went to Beto's Pizza for lunch today, and noticed the prices are higher for 2008.

Slices are now $1.10. Up from 99 cents.
Toppings now 45 cents, formerly 40 cents.

Same great taste and lots of raw cheese!!!

Had Betos today. Just as great as it was 30 years ago. Love it.

Beto's was recently remodeled. They now have a much larger dining room, if you choose to eat in.
It appears to me that they have changed hands (new owners?). But the pizza is as good as always it hasn't seem to have changed a bit. Still one of the finest pizza landmarks in the country.

See photo of the new Beto's by following the link embedded in my name.

I heard from John (above) that this place got remodeled, and it had been a while since I was last here, so I had to check it out. The place was TOTALLY different. Instead of two doors, one for take out and one for eat-in, now it is all one door, one counter and two registers, which in my opinion slowed down the ordering process, the line was almost out the door. The remodel was kinda nice, for appearance, but this is Beto's not some fancy smancy italian romantic night spot. Now I am not one who likes change, and I don't like the new look. I liked it better the old way. One other change I didn't like was the pizza . . . the crust was doughy and not crispy, and the raw cheese piled on top seemed to be different than I remember . . . . maybe shredded differently?? I don't know, but it just didn't taste the same, I really didn't care for it this time. I want the old Beto's back!!!!! I probably won't be coming here too much anymore . . . especially since Police Station Pizza moved into my area, and they have that old Beto's taste that I remember and like. Sorry Beto's CHANGE is not always a good thing.

Betos Pizza is great! As a regular customer (for more years that i want to admit) i must say that the remodel is beautiful. So much more space than there used to be! The pizza has only gotten better in my opinion and i have never had grey mushrooms or cold crust. the pizza is always hot and i know for a fact that the mushrooms are heated and so are the peppers. The cheese is the same as always. And lastly as busy as they are there could never be cold pizza.

For all of those who think Beto's pizza has changed its your imagination. I have been doing to Betos since they were part of the car wash that used to be next door. The pizza hasn't changed at bit, however with the 2 registers and new personnel the services is very screwy

While Beto's has remodeled, there are not new owners, and the pizza is still the same as it always has always been. Delicious! Additionally, the crust was still crispy. I am only back in the burgh every once and a while, but I always stop at Beto's. My mom introduced me to Beto's Pizza and I can't count how many people I have introduced to Beto's. I wouldn't be surprised if the number topped 20. All have really enjoyed the pizza.

I moved to the South Hills
In 1969'
We ordered "Beto's" Pizza
And it was " ABSOLUTELY " Fine!!!

Then,again and now
And forever till the day
They have a reputation for being the best!
And believe me; they'll stay that way!

And I will testify to that fact
To every Tim, Tom, Dick, and Rosie
And I will order their pizza forever
Or my name isn't Billy Nardozzi!
