Combine the Fuel and Fuddle-ish humorous takes on food names and the atmosphere of T.G.I. Friday's, and you have the Double Wide Grill. But is this a good thing?
After hearing about the wide selection of taps and bounty of veggie friendly food on the menu, I was sold on giving the Double Wide Grill a try. Nate and I met 4 friends there on a Saturday evening - we arrived early to put our names on the list since it was, after all, a weekend in the South Side and we assumed the place would be busy. However, there was no line at all and we were seated right away. I had the seitan wings and tofu skewers. I was highly impressed by the seitan wings and would have been fine with ending my meal right there, to tell you the truth. But, I wanted an entree as well, so along came the skewers. At $14 for this plate, I was not all that impressed. Sure it filled me up and was well presented, but definitely not $14 worth. I'm not sure that anyone at my table was overly impressed with their meals after the appetizers were finished.
Despite the mediocre entree, I was still itching to go back to the Double Wide Grill after my first encounter. I salivated every time I thought about those damn seitan wings for about a month, and I was finally able to round up the troops to make another trip back. This time I declared that I was getting only an appetizer and a salad. This seemed to be a better choice.
My overall impression of the Double Wide Grill is that it is overpriced and the atmosphere definitely does not mesh well with these high prices. When my waitress is wearing a gas station workshirt, I don't expect to pay much more than $10 for an entree. The beer selection is certainly above average, so I would go here for the appetizers and the drinks, but I'd skip the entree. In fact, I'd go here sooner than later, because I have a feeling this somewhat out-of-place restaurant is not going to last long in the South Side.

I've been to DWG twice, and while I wouldn't say the prices were outlandish, I would say that both times I was there the service was incredibly slow. It was packed both times I went, so hopefully they'll get their act together.
If you're an omnivore, the ribs here are terrific.

I've only been once and I was quite satisfied. Any random, meeting for happy hour (though I don't think DWG actually has a happy hour) with Michael is priceless. We met for beer and seitan wings. And we left satisfied. I like the physical appearance of the joint and that it appears to "open" for the summer months. I enjoyed the tap selection as well as the appetizers and would definitely go back - but, probably only for those things. We peaked at the menu prior to visiting and decided that the entrees didn't seem worth breaking the bank. Our bill was reasonable and we left full.

I have been to the Double Wide a few times and it is definitly not worth the trip. They claim to have a happy hour, but only if you are sitting at one of the 10 seats at the bar. They also have appetizer specials, nachos and wings. They definitly are not special, the nachos are really just chips with a cup of cheese on the side, and the wings were the smallest I have ever seen. Don't claim to have a happy hour if you don't.
The outdoor seating is great, so maybe the overpriced food and bad service is just the price you pay.

I go to the Double Wide Grill on a regular basis with a group of 30 from work, we all sit around the bar, so there are more seats then 20...and we have the Happy Hour Beers and food, I've never had bad service, and think for 4.00 they do a half order of there regular nachos which has black beans, corn, a tomato and onion relish kinda thing, fresh hot peppers...and I mean hot, and sour cream, they are covered with melted cheese, and come with a soup cup of this spicy cheese sauce definately not from a can! I think this is very resonable. All Beers are a dollar off...I don't know what others are looking for but this is great to me. The Saitan here is some of the best I've ever had...I suggest that..the hot saitan wings are awsome!
