Before our trip to Maui, Julie and I saw an amazing challenge on the Food Network, entitled "Flying Knives." This challenge introduced us to a style of cooking known as Teppanyaki. We also noted that one of the contestants, Kalae Tanaka, happened to be a cook on the island of Maui. We looked up his restaurant and were pleasantly surprised to find it was in the resort next to ours, the very one Julie's sister was staying in.
For those who do not know, as I did not, Teppanyaki is the style of cooking made famous by the Benihana chain of restaurants. This features a large griddle, surrounded by table space and chairs.

In the process of cooking an amazing meal on the grill for you, the Teppanyaki chef will strike up conversation and perform amazing feats of cooking. Examples of this include tossing shrimp with their spatula, tossing eggs and cracking them on the edge of their spatula, or the always impressive onion volcano!
Julie and I both had the Teppan Tofu, which was served with Edamame, miso soup, grilled vegetables, rice, and a sorbet dessert. A warning to vegans, the miso soup contains fish broth, so we opted to have more edamame instead.
