Places I would suggest if you asked me where to find a tasty tofu dish

Recently I have been talking about tofu a lot. I remember back in my early days of being a vegetarian when I severely hated tofu. The problem is tofu isn’t easy to make. Good tofu is uncommon, great tofu is exceedingly rare. So the most common tofu is not very good. I decided I should compile a list of my favorite places to get tofu. But not just the place to get it, because I’ve found even though one tofu dish maybe great another can be mediocre. So I am compiling a list of dishes and locations. I will update it as I find more. Also these are listed in no particular order, I consider them all of equal greatness.

1) the Quiet Storm (Pittsburgh) – Graham Street Tofu
2) the Quiet Storm (Pittsburgh) – Tofu Tenders (appetizer)
3) China Palace (Pittsburgh) – Sizziling Tofu
4) Angkor (Pittsburgh) – Crispy Tofu Triangles (appetizer)
5) Angkor (Pittsburgh) – Fresh spring rolls (appetizer)
6) Thai Gourmet (Pittsburgh) – Tao Hu Todd (appetizer)
7) Veggie Planet (Boston) - Tofu Scramble (brunch)
8) Sweet Basil & La Filipiniana (Pittsburgh) – Thai Pumpkin Tofu Curry (Special)
9) Chaya (Pittsburgh) – Tofu Teriyaki
10) Chaya (Pittsburgh) – Inari (Nigiri Sushi)

Feel free to drop a comment listing your favorite tofu dish, or even a tofu related experience. This post will be on the Suggestions page. I will cross-reference it to the restaurants mentioned above also.

Veggie Planet - Cambridge

I had vegan cinnamon waffles with fresh fruit and home fries at Veggie Planet. This was part of the Sunday brunch menu. The waffles were very good. They had a softer texture then I am used to from non-vegan waffles. It was different but not bad in the least. They were very tasty.

I had a few bites of Julie’s tofu scramble which was made with some of the best tofu I’ve ever had. I have no idea what they do to their tofu, but it makes it taste real good.

You can see a picture of the food in Julie's review.

Veggie Planet - Cambridge

Nate and I ate at Veggie Planet in the Boston area after visiting MIT and Harvard. It was another restaurant I'd heard a lot about over at Veggie Boards. However, this one had gotten a lot of negative reviews. People seemed to think the food was good but that the staff was less than accomodating.

When you first walk in, you realize that it is a pretty laid back place. You have to walk down steps to get inside because it is in the basement level of a building. There was a guy playing a 12-string guitar (I think) on the small stage. It was one of those get-your-own-beverages places, which I think is fine.

I guess during normal hours they typically serve pizza, but we were there during brunch-time and they had a special menu. Nate got vegan waffles with fruit and homefries (and I think the waffles had orange flavor, but I'm not sure) and I had homefry tofu scramble, which was excellent.

It had so many vegetables, including what I think was squash. There was actually not much tofu, but that didn't make it bad. Nate declared it the best meal he'd tried on the trip.

We didn't have any problems with the staff and I would go back here again if we're ever again in the area.
