I've read lots of great reviews on the Bangkok Balcony, a Thai restaurant in Squirrel Hill, over the past few months, and tonight I finally had the chance to try it out for myself.
The restaurant has a really cool atmosphere - it is on the second floor of a building on Forbes Avenue. The setup is quite nice and somewhat upscale, but with a casual dress code. The entire wall facing the street is a large, slanted plate glass window, and we were lucky enough to be seated next to it.
The menu is quite expansive with a large selection of appetizers, soups, salads, curry dishes, and other entrees. There is even more room for variety as nearly every dish can be made with tofu or your choice of meats. The prices weren't too steep - most entrees were in the 11-12 dollar range (with most vegetarian dishes being a dollar cheaper than the meat options), which seems like a good deal for a place with an upscale atmosphere. They also had a small, but decent beer selection, featuring a handful of microbrews and imports. I opted to have a Hoegaarden.
We decided on the noodle rolls as an appetizer and I got mixed vegetables with tofu as an entree. The noodle rolls were great, although I had no idea what to expect out of a "noodle roll." I was imagining a spring roll with noodles inside, but the "roll" itself was actually a big noodle. I've never had something like that, but it was quite tasty. My entree, however, wasn't as spectacular. My food pretty much looked exactly the same as Nate's (who had one of the curry dishes), except his was in a bowl and mine was on a plate. To be fair, I have to admit that I wasn't expecting anything overwhelming from a dish called "Mixed Vegetables," but it ended up being pretty bland. This may be partly due to the fact that on a scale of 1-10 of spiciness, I chose a 2. I'm not sure though, because Nate's dish was a 3 and packed a lot more punch as far as taste goes. My dish didn't taste bad, but it was nothing that I would be to eager to recommend to anyone else.
I would go here again to try one of the many other interesting things on the menu, but I'm not anxious to get there anytime soon. There are too many other restaurants on my list that I'd like to try out first before putting Bangkok Balcony back on my list of restaurants in "heavy rotation" again.
