I have gone by Bites & Brews many times and I've always just assumed that they had food that I didn't like for some reason. The other day I checked the menu in the Wheel Deliver catalog and realized that it sounded pretty good, so Nate and I decided to give it a shot.
The first thing I noticed when we walked in was the large selection of good micros and imported beers, including a lot of local brews on tap. I opted for the East End Witte, which I hadn't had before. Unfortunately, I didn't really like it. It had a really strange spicy kick to it that I wasn't expecting. The cool thing though is that you can get all the draught beers in 10 or 20 oz. So you can try 2 10 oz. beers if you want and not have to worry about getting too drunk to enjoy the rest of your day.
The next cool thing about this place is that the menu is a slip of paper with all the choices and you fill in circles next to what you want. It's like how you used to order MTO's at Sheetz before they got touch-screens that confuse the hell out of the elderly. Oh yeah - I should point out that Bites & Brews is a design your own sandwich / pizza place. So for the sandwiches, you choose your bread, a few toppings, and dressing and then you can get salad, coleslaw, or chips on the side. I had hummus, spinach, onions, tomatoes, and mushrooms on mulit-grain bread with balsamic vinaigrette dressing. It was excellent!
So really, this place is kind of like the Pittsburgh Deli Company without all the cool sides (veggie chili! mmm...), but still good. And the food is cheap. A meatless sandwich with a side is only $5. This is the kind of place I would kill for to have in Oakland so I could eat there for lunch. I'm talking murder one, people.

There is nothing I enjoy more then a place where I can design my own sandwich. I had spinach, lettuce, sun dried tomato, and hummus on foccacia bread. I also ordered a garden salad as my side. They have a fairly broad beer selection with something like thirty different beer flavors on tap. The selection was a mix of domestic, micro, and imports, with several I had not tried before. I’m excited to go back and try more beer and a different sandwich combination. I am contemplating the delectable possibilities inherent in the sauerkraut option…
