There was a time when I would have stood up for Gene's. In fact during my college years, I developed a true fondness for the joint. Things have gone down hill. I went on a Friday night, and I was still served my draft in a very over-sized glass for a mere $2.25 but all of the fun was gone from the place. To start with, there were only about 10 people there and some of them left during the short time I was there. Moreover, there were no paper towels in the ladies' room. I may have overlooked this in my younger years but as I age, I prefer to dry my hands before touching the door handle that others may have touched post pee, sans sanitation. I don't know if moisture helps to transfer germs, but I've always thought it did. So there it is. Gene's will henceforth be taken out of my Oakland bar hop rotation.

That means shitty beer at low prices. If this place has food, I'd suspect it of arsenic contamination.

Gene's Place is not a restaurant, but a bar.
This is one of the many bars I won't go to unless a large group of friends requests my presence, but I have been there enough times to be able to submit my opinion. What can I say? I really think it sucks. They have a terrible drink selection. It used to be called Denny's but changed it's name sometime this year to "Gene's Place" and even has a new sign that says something like "Gene's Place, est. 2005," so I guess they are hoping to stick around for awhile. If not, the sign will surely become a collector's item on a South Oakland porch. Gene's Place is a great place to go and get drunk for less than 2 dollars because they are always selling 25 cent Old Germans- although I don't know how anyone could possibly ever become even slightly intoxicated by drinking Old German because it is 99% water and 1% unknown substances, possibly, but not definitively, relating to fermented beverages. I once bought an Augustiner Lager here (not realizing that it is produced by the Pittsburgh Brewing Company, brewer of such low-quality beers like I.C. Light) and it was the flattest, most disgusting drink I've ever had in my life. I can't blame the poor taste entirely on the brewer though because I think the beer had been sitting in the keg for about a year and a half, or at least tasted like it. It had absolutely no foam or hint that it was ever a "beer" at all and I started feeling quite queasy after just a few sips. I actually just put it down on a ledge and left without finishing it. I think the bartender was shocked that someone ordered something other than an Old German.
It's not secret that I'm not a fan of Gene's, but I guess this is the kind of place that a lot of South Oaklanders like. More power to you if you do, but they won't be getting anymore of my business anytime soon.
