Places I would suggest if you asked me where to find a tasty tofu dish

Recently I have been talking about tofu a lot. I remember back in my early days of being a vegetarian when I severely hated tofu. The problem is tofu isn’t easy to make. Good tofu is uncommon, great tofu is exceedingly rare. So the most common tofu is not very good. I decided I should compile a list of my favorite places to get tofu. But not just the place to get it, because I’ve found even though one tofu dish maybe great another can be mediocre. So I am compiling a list of dishes and locations. I will update it as I find more. Also these are listed in no particular order, I consider them all of equal greatness.

1) the Quiet Storm (Pittsburgh) – Graham Street Tofu
2) the Quiet Storm (Pittsburgh) – Tofu Tenders (appetizer)
3) China Palace (Pittsburgh) – Sizziling Tofu
4) Angkor (Pittsburgh) – Crispy Tofu Triangles (appetizer)
5) Angkor (Pittsburgh) – Fresh spring rolls (appetizer)
6) Thai Gourmet (Pittsburgh) – Tao Hu Todd (appetizer)
7) Veggie Planet (Boston) - Tofu Scramble (brunch)
8) Sweet Basil & La Filipiniana (Pittsburgh) – Thai Pumpkin Tofu Curry (Special)
9) Chaya (Pittsburgh) – Tofu Teriyaki
10) Chaya (Pittsburgh) – Inari (Nigiri Sushi)
11) Pacific'O (Lahaina, Maui, HI) - Blackened Tofu
12) Teppanyaki Dan's (Lahaina, Maui, HI) - Teppan Tofu

Feel free to drop a comment listing your favorite tofu dish, or even a tofu related experience. This post will be on the Suggestions page. I will cross-reference it to the restaurants mentioned above also.

Hunan Kitchen - Squirrel Hill

I ate here recently at a birthday celebration for Julie. I didn't know what to expect even though I had been told it was chinese/asian. I believe I was told this during finals week so I had forgotten that part. Anyway I ordered spinach lo mein and it was cool spinach flavored noodles instead of what I expected - regular lo mein with spinach. I highly recommend - partly because two of my favorite things to eat are lo mein and spinach. Jeff got general tsos chicken which is his chinese restaurant staple order. He is really picky with his food in general and even more so with chinese. So I was pleasantly surprised when he said he liked it. He has sworn off almost every chinese restaurant that I know of except for House of Hunan in Ford City and Kittanning. Maybe the similar restaurant name helped. Heh. I will go again and you should too.

Hunan Kitchen & Vegetarian Restaurant - Squirrel Hill

This place used to be called the Zen Garden. It was an all vegetarian, Asian style restaurant. Then I guess business wasn't going so well so they added meat to the menu. I hadn't been there since that change until tonight. I have to say, I am very pleased with this place. I went with a group of people, half vegetarians, half not. I think everyone was really happy with their dishes, which is something hard to accomplish with that kind of crowd.

I had eggplant in garlic sauce with brown rice. Since I have a hard time cooking eggplant well, I always appreciate a well prepared eggplant dish. It was excellent and very purple! Nate had vegetarian General Tso's which looked very tasty. I forget what everyone else had, but everyone's food looked very good and my dad even complimented the waiter on his soup! You know it's a good place when your dad pays them compliments.

All in all, I was really happy with my experience here and it's a shame that I didn't go for like 2 years. It's a nice place to take your family or even to go with one person for a "romantic dinner."
